Preparations for the production of a vaccine against covid-19 are accelerating, on the day when Germany passed the one million infected and Russia started vaccinating the military.
In anticipation of a vaccine in early 2021, Germany is preparing to set up vaccination centers in hundreds of locations: exhibition halls, concert halls or ice and velodrome skating rinks, as well as the old Berlin Tegel airport. .
The second wave is reaching Germany in particular: 1,006,394 reported cases (+22,806 in the last 24 hours) and 15,586 deaths (+426).
The British government announced today that it had asked the health regulator (MHRA) to evaluate the vaccine developed by the British laboratory AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford after the president of the pharmaceutical company announced that an “additional trial” was needed.
For its part, Russia has started vaccinating the military, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced Friday, adding that more than 400,000 soldiers will be vaccinated.
The Russian Sovereign Fund (RDIF) has struck a deal with Hetero, an Indian generic drug manufacturer, to produce more than 100 million doses of the Russian vaccine.
Phase II and III clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine are currently underway in India and production could begin as early as 2021.
According to RDIF, some 50 countries have already ordered more than 1.2 billion doses of the Russian vaccine that is expected to be produced in Brazil, China or South Korea.
In Brazil, President Jair Bolsonaro said he will not be vaccinated.
The king of Spain, Felipe VI, in quarantine since Monday after coming into contact with a person infected with the new coronavirus now tested negative, will remain isolated as a precaution.
The countries that have recorded the highest number of new deaths in recent reports are the United States with 1,333 new deaths, Italy (822) and Brazil (691).
The second wave is far reaching Germany, which will increase restrictions until the beginning of January, with the closure of bars and restaurants and restrictions on the participation of people in private meetings.
After asking the population not to go abroad at Christmas, especially skiing, Germany also argues that the European Union should ban the opening of winter sports centers until 10 January.
But not everyone agrees. Austria intends to open its tracks and for Finland there is no doubt that the closure would deal a “death blow” to tourism.
In France the stations may reopen during the holidays, but the cable cars will remain closed.
While Switzerland has reopened the slopes, the Italian ski resorts look like dead cities, without practitioners and with shops, hotels and restaurants closed.
On the other hand, activities will reopen in Belgium starting next Tuesday, although a partial containment remains in place to continue the decline in contamination.
The economic consequences are also weighing on restaurants which remain closed in many countries.
In Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, several shopping centers today took advantage of the “Black Friday” day to increase sales, before closing for three weeks.
In France, restaurants have implemented “click and receive” and delivery.
“I don’t even do 30% of my normal billing (…) but I am comforted that the customers are there”, says Raphaël Rego, from Parisian restaurant “Oka”.
If the situation in France continues to improve, imprisonment will be lifted on 15 December, replaced by a curfew, except for the nights of 24 and 31 December, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
After four weeks of imprisonment, England will also reopen non-essential stores early next month, but the vast majority of residents will continue to live under severe restrictions.
In Wales, the premier announced an increase in restrictions on bars and restaurants to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus before Christmas, when the entire British population will be able to reunite with their families.
In Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, the streets were empty today and the curtains closed, the first day of curfew imposed at night and on weekends for the next 14 days.
The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 1,433,378 deaths resulting from more than 60.9 million cases of the infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
