German authorities reached an agreement on Wednesday to impose a one-month period of partial imprisonment in Germany, a commitment that will involve the adoption of the most restrictive measures to contain the pandemic as, in the spring, the country was in total confinement.
This agreement was reached after video conference negotiations between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and leaders of the 16 German federal states, according to a source familiar with the discussion, cited by Bloomberg.
According to broadcaster DW, which cites several German media outlets, the one-month partial confinement will take effect next Monday, November 2. These new restrictive measures need to be reviewed after two weeks in effect. The details of the decisions taken will be announced today by the German Chancellor herself, at a press conference to be held this afternoon.
Already this morning the Bloomberg agency had reported that Merkel intended to propose to the heads of the Länder governments to close bars, cafes, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, theaters, swimming pools and public parks for one month. Restaurants and cafes are expected to be closed until November 30, Reuters and DPA say.
Again with regard to commercial spaces, the new rules will allow the opening of shops only and will guarantee the presence of only one customer for every 10 square meters of available space.
During the meeting held this morning, Angela Merkel also stressed the need to raise awareness in German society on the increased risk of contagion, calling for the minimization of social contacts and to travel only in essential circumstances.

The British newspaper The Guardian recalls that Chancellor Merkel warned in September that the country could hit 19,000 new cases of covid during the Christmas period, a statement that led to accusations of “alarmism”.
