Germany has recorded the second highest number of deaths since the start of the pandemic in the past 24 hours, 305 and 17,561 new infections, a sharp decline from the previous week
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), an epidemiological reference center, has today brought the total number of infected people in Germany to 833,307, of which 13,119 have died, while about 284,000 cases remain active (of which about 3,500 in intensive care units) .
The number of new infections is a moderately positive number, as it maintains the downward curve after last week’s data (with a maximum of 23,542 infections on November 9) and represents about a thousand fewer cases than last Wednesday.
The increase in the number of deaths, behind only 315 recorded on April 16, is linked to the total increase in cases in the last month and to the increase in the percentage of infected elderly in recent weeks.
Germany applied a new partial containment in early November and until the end of the month to prevent the spread of the second wave of the pandemic.
Bars and restaurants, theaters and cinemas, museums and “spas” remain closed, while shops and schools remain open. Tourism is prohibited, teleworking is recommended and contacts are limited to a maximum of 10 people from a maximum of two families.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of government of the 16 federal states will meet next Wednesday to assess whether these measures need to be maintained.
The similar meeting, held Monday, was unsuccessful due to differences between the central executive (in favor of tightening restrictions) and the federal states (reluctant to take further steps in this direction).
The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 1,328,048 deaths resulting from more than 55 million cases of the infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
