French forces kill major al-Qaeda leader in helicopters and ground operations

French forces killed Bah ag Moussa, one of the main military leaders of the North African branch of al-Qaeda’s terrorist network, during an operation in northeastern Mali, French military minister Florence Parly said Friday. according to Reuters, inform Agerpres.

The former colonel of the Malian army, also known as Bamoussa Diarra, was the “right hand man” of Iyad Ag Ghali, the leader of Mali’s most active jihadist group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which has committed numerous attacks on military and civilian personnel in Mali and Burkina Faso.

“Bah ag Moussa, a historical figure of the jihadist movement in the Sahel, is believed to be responsible for several attacks on Malian and international forces,” Parly said in a statement.

Bah ag Moussa, who is on the US’s wanted terrorist list, was killed on Tuesday in an operation involving ground troops helicopters and is part of a series of missions in which French forces have killed dozens of Islamist fighters in the past weeks.

“This is a great success in the fight against terrorism,” added Florence Parly.

A former colonial power, France has more than 5,100 soldiers in sub-Saharan Africa whose main mission is to combat Islamist militancy in the region.
