Fraser Island: Fighting Massive Fire

Half of the largest sand island in the world, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1992, has already been destroyed: 80,000 hectares have already fallen victim to the flames. On Wednesday alone, 345,000 liters of water were thrown away, local firefighters announced on Twitter.

This week the fire got stronger and stronger due to a persistent heat wave on Australia’s east coast. Tourists were told not to go to the island. Fraser Island is popular around the world, “which makes it so painful to watch the island burn,” Queensland Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said. The fire is said to have been started by an illegal bonfire on October 14.
