BerlinAfter a fatal attack on an Iranian nuclear scientist, the Federal Foreign Ministry has urged caution. The office told Funke media group newspapers on Saturday ahead of possible negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program that it urgently asks all parties involved to refrain from taking measures that could lead to a further escalation of the situation. “We are very concerned about reports from Iran,” an AA spokesperson said.
Although they have no knowledge of the incident, it is clear that “the killing of Mohsen Fachrisadeh is once again worsening the situation in the region, at a time when we just don’t need such an escalation.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif called on Europeans in particular on Twitter to “abandon their shameful double standards and condemn this act of state terror”. The Foreign Office did not respond to this.
Mohsen Fachrisadeh was hit by his car on Friday and injured so badly that he died shortly after in a hospital, according to the Iranian government. Iran blames Israel and the United States for the assassination attempt.
US President Donald Trump had terminated an international agreement with Iran on Iran’s nuclear program and imposed economic sanctions on Tehran. Iranian observers also saw the attack as an attempt by Israel and Trump’s elected government to torpedo a new start in relations between Tehran and Washington under Trump’s designated successor Joe Biden. It is not yet clear who is behind the fatal attack.
