The village of Fucking, in Austria, will change its name in January next year, a decision made by the locals who for several years have been trying to adopt the name of Fugging to escape the jokes of tourists and the constant theft of license plates.

Fucking is part of the municipality of Tarsdorf, about 40 kilometers north of Salzburg, near the German border. The village, where just over 100 people live, has become famous for its particular name in English.

Over the years, locals have lost count of the number of place name plates that have been stolen – a high expense for local taxpayers -, not to mention tourists who often come to the village entrance to photograph or film themselves. next to the sign, giving life to the imagination.

On 11 November, the inhabitants of Fucking punched the table and the city council of Tarsdorf voted in favor of the name change.

Tarsdorf mayor Andrea Holzner confirmed the move to Reuters and indicated that, starting January 1, 2021, the town will be called Fugging, according to the way its inhabitants pronounce the village’s name.

The name of Fucking dates back to 1070, when the city was named after Lord Focko, who founded the village in the 6th century. Since then, the name has remained unchanged until the village began to gain fame during World War II, when British and American soldiers deployed in Salzburg discovered the site and took the first photographs. With the advent of the Internet, Fucking’s fame skyrocketed and the village became a tourist attraction.

In Austria there are still the towns of Oberfucking and Unterfucking (which would be like Fucking de Cima and Fucking from below), but, so far, there is no indication that its inhabitants intend to change their name.
