The father “was arrested for manslaughter and complicity in the smuggling of migrants”, added the same source.
Dozens of Senegalese have died in recent weeks at sea in accidents while trying to reach Europe via the Canary Islands, according to the International Organization for Migration.
The figures, however, are denied by the Senegalese government, which said in a statement that it had intercepted 1,500 migrants in recent days and arrested 29 traffickers.
