The Ethiopian government has expressed its plan to sell electricity to the Gulf countries by signing and agreeing to launch the feasibility study on Saturday.
The country of Eastern Africa with enormous renewable energy potential has signed an agreement with the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority and the International Energy Linking Organization (GEIDCO).
After signing the agreement on January 12, 2014, Sileshi Bekele, minister of water, irrigation and electricity engineering, said that the energy interconnection between countries, regions and continents is one of the most important ways to bring people together for mutual benefit and economic prosperity.
In recent years Ethiopia has accumulated over one hundred million dollars annually by selling electricity to the neighboring countries of Djibouti and Sudan.
The construction of the first project of high voltage direct current (HVDC) power line in East Africa is underway with an estimate of the total cost of $ 1 billion, the financing of which is obtained from the Development Bank of the Africa.
Once the project ends in 2019, the electricity exchange between Ethiopia and Kenya is expected to begin. In the meantime, it is not yet clear how beautiful it would be for Ethiopia landlocked to connect with the Gulf countries.
"The link with Ethiopia is part of the strategy approved by the board of directors to contribute to the creation of the electricity market and to the promotion of electricity exchange," said the United Arab Undersecretary for Undersecretary of the United States. Energy and Industry and a member of the Board of Directors of the Gulf electricity interconnection Authority. Al Nayadi.
He emphasized that connection projects aim to save the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) electricity grids for any 100 percent partial or total interruption by providing instant support for the required power transmission via the electrical connection network directly.
The Gulf Electricity Interconnection project is one of the most important infrastructure projects approved by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Leaders to improve energy security and increase the reliability and safety of Gulf electrical systems, according to Sabq-sa. com report
