The new restrictions come after several days of continued growth in COVID-19-associated infections and deaths. In the past 24 hours, the Bulgarian Ministry of Health has reported 2,569 new cases. Authorities warn that the growing number of hospitalized patients and also the increase in the number of infected health workers risk causing a collapse of the health system.

Previously, the medical authorities in Sofia imposed a mask requirement in both closed and open public spaces.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, 61, tested positive for the new coronavirus on Sunday.
