  • The breeding and invasion of desert locusts (DL) in Ethiopia is now concentrated in the Somali region. Mature swarms continue to cross the region from Somalia.

  • All planes and helicopters have been moved to the new epicenter of the operation (Jigjiga, Gode, Kebridehar).

  • Hatching and banding are expected to continue in November and beyond.

  • According to forecasts by the Desert Locust Information Service, a new generation of immature swarms will form in early December. If left unchecked, DL will move south and threaten southeastern Ethiopia, southern Somalia and northeastern Kenya.

  • The environmental and health assessment of the DL control operations continues in the Somali regions where the control operations are underway. No particular incidents related to the use of pesticides were observed on the health of operators and on the environment in general.

  • Field trials of the Novacrid biopesticide have been successful. The results showed a 50% decrease in locust populations after eight days of treatment.
