Here’s what’s happening Wednesday in the 2020 election.
TODAY’S MAIN STORIES:
‘AMERICA IS BACK’: President-elect Joe Biden unveiled his national security team, his first substantive offer of how he will move from Trump-era “America First” politics by relying on experts from the Democratic establishment to be some of his most important advisors. Biden’s veterans in Washington all have ties to the Obama administration as the president-elect has sought to convey a clear message about his desire to re-establish a more predictable U.S. engagement on the global stage.
THE TEAM OF BIDEN: Biden’s first wave of cabinet picks and choices for its White House staff rewarded stamina over star power, with a prize placed on government experience and expertise as it seeks to rebuild an impoverished and demoralized federal bureaucracy. With an eye in part towards selections that may need to seek approval from a Republican-controlled Senate, Biden has prioritized choosing qualified professionals by avoiding flashy names.
SENATE SWAY: When Biden began deploying his administrative team, one voice remained particularly silent: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Senate Republicans will have a great deal of influence in confirming or denying candidates for Biden’s government, regardless of which party controls the tightly divided Senate after the Georgia ballot election. But key Republican senators, including the GOP leader, are silent for now.
TRUMP VENTS: President Donald Trump insists he won’t give up his fight to overturn the election results, but preparations across the federal government are beginning in earnest to support Biden’s incoming administration. Career federal officials have opened agency doors to hundreds of transition assistants ready to prepare for Biden’s Jan. 20 grand opening. And Trump has agreed to allow Biden to receive highly confidential national intelligence information.
GOP SUES: Republicans have filed a lawsuit asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to block the certification of the presidential election results. A recount is underway regarding Biden’s victory over Trump. The lawsuit echoes many of the arguments Trump is making in an unsuccessful attempt to have tens of thousands of ballots discounted during the recount. At least 10 cases have been filed across the country seeking to stop certification in parts or all key battlefield states. None have been successful.
