It is not the first time that politicians are involved in bribes related to drug trafficking in Mexico. The same happens with the police and even military personnel.

The accusations that reach the summit, in this case, the presidency of the country, are more rare. In court, Alex Cifuentes, one of El Chapo's closest members, said the Mexican trafficker authorized a $ 100 million bribe to former Mexican president Peña Nieto, who was in power between 2012 and 2018 .

According to journalists who will participate in the trial – which can not be registered -, Cifuentes would have said that, initially, Peña Nieto asked 250 million, before reaching an agreement on 100 million.

The payment, said this element of the El Chapo cartel, was held in Mexico City in October 2012 by a friend of El Chapo.

Peña Nieto has so far refused to respond to these allegations, while denying other allegations of corruption linked to El Chapo.
