The online service Twitter wants to deny Donald Trump access to the official presidential account, regardless of whether or not he admits his defeat. After the transfer of office at the end of January, the @POTUS user account will be handed over to Joe Biden, said »Politico« quoting a company spokesperson.
“Twitter is preparing to support the handover of official White House Twitter accounts on January 20, 2021,” the company wrote in an email. In addition to @POTUS, this also includes Vice President @VP, First Lady @FLOTUS, and White House @WhiteHouse user accounts.
Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, had introduced the bills. For the handover in 2016, the Obama team presented a detailed handover protocol, which must now be used again. As a result, Trump presidency tweets will be archived in a separate new account that the US national archives have access to. The tweets are then deleted from the original accounts and passed on to the Biden team. However, they keep their original followers.
Most important private account for Trump
Whether or not Donald Trump’s team is involved in the handover is irrelevant, according to Twitter. No information should be passed from one government to another. So far, Donald Trump has refused to acknowledge Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential election. Instead, he speaks of widespread election scams, but without yet having presented any evidence.
Trump barely used the @POTUS account during his presidency. Rather, he tweeted about his private user account @realdonaldtrump, which with nearly 89 million followers has a significantly greater reach than the official account with around 33 million followers. Almost exclusively the tweets from @realdonaldtrump and @WhiteHouse were retweeted on @POTUS.
Donald Trump will keep his private account even after the handover in late January. He had already used it a lot in the 2016 election campaign and made it his most important communication channel during his presidency.
New rules after the end of the mandate
However, here too, Trump expects change. With his resignation as president he loses his status as a “world leader” on Twitter according to “Politico”. This allows you not to delete tweets that violate the terms of use, but only to receive a warning. This had happened many times over the past few weeks, for example when Trump questioned the integrity of the election without providing evidence.
As a regular citizen with no official position, Trump should be subject to the same rules as other users in the future. For years, social networks like Twitter and Facebook have largely left Trump’s statements unsubscribed. Only after public pressure in recent months have the posts been subjected to fact-checks, warned or limited in their scope.
