President Donald Trump, at the end of his term, announced on Wednesday that he had forgiven his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, thus ending a three-year court scandal.
Former Army General Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russian ambassador in Washington. He was Trump’s advisor for only a few weeks, until the scandal of meeting the Russian diplomat broke out.
“It is my great honor to announce that General Michael T. Flynn has been pardoned. Congratulations to him and his wonderful family, I know you will have a truly fantastic Thanksgiving celebration,” Donald Trump wrote on Twitter, confirming information that they had already appeared in the press about his intention to forgive Flynn.

The case of Michael Flynn
Michael Flynn was forced to resign just 22 days after he became Trump’s National Security Advisor. But President Trump has always said that the investigation was “a witch hunt” for political purposes, and that Flynn, a former army general and former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), is a trusted man.
After participating in Trump’s campaign, Michael Flynn had confidential talks with the Russian Ambassador to Washington, Sergei Kisliak, in December 2016. He became a National Security Advisor and was interrogated on January 24, 2017 by the FBI, but hid these contacts. . He also had to resign quickly because he lied to Vice President Mike Pence.
In 2017, Michael Flynn agreed to plead guilty to perjury and cooperate in investigating suspicions of a secret deal with Russia. Last year he was sentenced to six months in prison, changing his lawyers and his defense strategy. Since then he has asked for the proceedings to be canceled, declaring himself a victim of manipulation.
Exceptionally, the US Department of Justice withdrew its complaint against Flynn in May, stating that the investigation against the former general had no legitimate basis and that his statements, “even if false, were irrelevant”. Thus, Attorney General William Barr offered a political victory to Trump, who reiterated that Michael Flynn is innocent.
But in the meantime, a federal judge has asked for a judicial review of the case.
The pardon granted by Trump now removes the matter from the jurisdiction of the courts.
