Denmark reassures the planet: COVID-19 vaccine causes mutations found in mink – Source News

A potential candidate vaccine being developed in Denmark has shown in early animal tests to be effective against a mutation in the novel coronavirus found in mink in the country, a researcher working on the vaccine said Thursday.

Danish authorities began the slaughter of 17 million minks last week, warning that a recently detected strain in these farm animals and humans could render future COVID vaccines ineffective, writes agerpres.ro.

Early studies on the mutant strain, called Cluster 5, showed the virus’s reduced sensitivity to antibodies, which could compromise the effectiveness of future vaccines, authorities said last week.

But antibodies from rabbits treated with a vaccine being developed by the Danish National Serum Institute (SSI) successfully defeated the Cluster 5 strain, according to Anders Fomsgaard, principal investigator at SSI.

“We couldn’t resist testing the rabbit antibodies we have against Cluster 5 and it worked,” Fomsgaard told DR on Thursday.

The Danish experimental vaccine, in its early stages of development, is about to enter its first phase of human testing, where it is unclear whether it will have the same effect.

“We don’t know if it will be applied to other vaccines and if it will be applied to human antibodies,” Fomsgaard said.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warned Thursday in a risk assessment that there is “ currently high uncertainty ” about the potential threat posed by the spread of the virus to mink, its mutations and its subsequent transmission from new to humans.
