After a coronavirus mutation was found in Danish minks, the government wanted to cull millions of fur animals. But apparently the legal basis for this has so far been lacking. Now he was costing the Agriculture Minister his job.

Danish Agriculture Minister Mogens Jensen resigned after killing millions of minks. “I informed the Prime Minister today that I want to resign from the government,” he said. The Danish government had ordered the killing of all farmed mink due to the discovery of a mutated version of the coronavirus, without the necessary legislation to kill healthy animals. “I apologize,” Jensen told Danish broadcaster DR.

Jensen had no support in parliament

The Copenhagen government has announced that the majority in parliament now supports the decision to kill mink. The leftist parties, which support the minority government of the Social Democrats, no longer have faith in the Minister of Agriculture. He then drew the consequences and announced on Facebook that he could no longer rely on the sufficient support of the majority of Danish parliamentary parties. He told Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to leave the government.

Earlier this month, a mutated version of the coronavirus was found on some Danish farms, which had also infected people. A total of around 15 million minks, including healthy animals, should therefore be killed. In particular, the so-called cluster 5 variant of the virus has been classified as a concern by the Danish health institute SSI because, according to the institute, it could have possible effects on future corona vaccines.

According to the Danish food authority Fødevarestyrelsen, all minks on herds infected with the coronavirus were killed: 284 were affected in total. This corresponds to approximately every fourth mink farm in Denmark. Another 25 are suspected of being corona.
