Stefan Lofven said that the country “is facing a situation that risks becoming very black” and that “it can remain in the situation it experienced last spring”.
Sweden has seen an unprecedented number of infections with the novel coronavirus in recent weeks, which is putting pressure on the country’s health system and intensive care units.
“All the indicators point in the wrong direction,” Lofven said, during a joint press conference with Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren.
He specified that all places authorized to sell alcohol must close 30 minutes before 22:00 and described these places, particularly bars and nightclubs, as “risky environments”.
On Wednesday, the Swedish capita reintroduced the ban on visiting homes and aged care facilities, after a spike in new coronavirus infections was reported in this type of location in Stockholm.
Sweden, which has chosen to keep parts of its company open, lifted its ban on visiting nursing homes in September.
Overall, this country of 10 million has recorded 6,082 deaths and 166,707 infections since the start of the pandemic.
