Iran plans to enter a new phase of coronavirus measures, with a strict and indefinite blockade across the country, in an attempt to limit the widespread spread of the pandemic, DPA reports.
“These containment measures will take effect on November 21 and are necessary to save lives,” President Hassan Rouhani said in a televised speech Saturday.
The restrictions on public life will continue indefinitely until the number of new cases of coronavirus infections and deaths decreases, he added.
“People have to accept the bitter reality that this problem will stay with us for a long time and that we will have to live with this unwanted guest during this time,” Rouhani said.

Details of the new restrictions, including the economic sectors that will be affected and whether driving bans will also be imposed, will be announced by the coronavirus crisis team by November 21, the Iranian president said.
Rouhani in recent months has opposed the return to total blockade imposed earlier this year, citing economic considerations. However, a dramatic increase in the number of new cases in recent weeks has apparently forced the government to change its position.
The official death toll from the pandemic in Iran currently stands at over 40,000, while the number of confirmed coronavirus cases so far has reached nearly 740,000. However, testing capacity is limited, which means that the actual number of cases could be double.
