Namibia has put 170 live elephants up for sale to reduce their numbers on its territory, in part due to growing conflicts between humans and animals of this endangered species, which cannot be culled due to international pressure. Thursday AFP.
An announcement published Wednesday in the government newspaper New Era offered 170 “high value” elephants for sale to domestic and international buyers, writes agerpres.ro.

A semi-arid southern African country with a small population, Namibia is home to around 28,000 pahiderms, according to Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta.
The minister told AFP that his government has chosen to sell live elephants for several reasons, mainly due to their growing numbers.

“Some states have complained that Namibia is slaughtering male elephants,” the official said. “Instead, we decided, after some research, to sell them,” he added.
According to the ministry, the animals were put up for sale after “the need to reduce their population due to drought and an increase in the number of animals, which led to conflicts between humans and elephants”.

With the declaration of independence of the state in 1990, the number of elephants in Namibia dropped to about 5,000, but it increased significantly after the establishment of a world protection program.
According to the announcement, entire groups of elephants must be captured so that small or young specimens are not left behind.

Shifeta stressed that Namibia does not intend to recklessly sell elephants. “We must ensure that the countries have the right conditions” to receive them, the minister stressed.
For the export of these animals, buyers must ensure that the requirements of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) are met in both exporting and importing countries, so that the transaction will authorize, is indicated in the aforementioned announcement.

Namibia released 100 wild buffaloes in October. In June 2019 – after a state of natural disaster due to drought was declared in the previous month – the country also put 1,000 animals on sale, including 600 buffaloes, 150 springbok gas, 60 giraffes and 28 elephants. The goal was, according to the Ministry of the Environment, to limit losses to livestock and to obtain 1.1 million dollars for the conservation of the species.
