Corona in Turkey: doctors talk about tsunami! New rules from Tuesday – Politics abroad

In view of the sharp increase in the number of cases, Turkey is significantly tightening restrictions on the crown. The changes will take effect tomorrow, Tuesday. The Turkish Medical Association now even speaks of a “crown tsunami” that is sweeping the country.

The new measures at a glance

► During the week there is a daily curfew from 21:00 to 5:00. So far, the curfew has only been enforced on weekends.

► Older people aged 65 and over and young people under 20 can no longer use public transport. This was announced Monday by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. There would be no New Year celebrations either, Erdogan said.

► Only up to 30 people can attend the funeral. As in many other countries, the number of new infections in Turkey has recently increased significantly.

Doubts about the accuracy of the published data

Currently, the daily number of new infections is 83 million countries officially in about 30,000 cases. According to authorities, 188 people have died from or from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

The Turkish Medical Association (TTB) doubts the government numbers and is even speculating at least 50,000 new Covid cases every day.

► The association warned again on Monday that state hospitals were full. The government’s claim that only about 70 percent of ICU beds are occupied contradicts polls by the TTB, according to a statement. “Patients sometimes wait days for a bed in an intensive care unit.”

In some provinces, patients are treated in corridors or canteens. But there is not enough staff and equipment to take care of them. The country is currently experiencing a “tsunami” that the TTB had been warning about for months.

The government must make more places in private hospitals and foundations available to Covid patients, the TTB asked. Private clinics have been declared pandemic hospitals. However, these proceed selectively and are associated with high cost to the patient.

Last week, for the first time in months, the Turkish government announced the full number of cases of people in the country who have tested positive for the coronavirus. Previously, only the number of people infected with symptoms had been published since late July.
