Colombian Defense Minister Guillermo Botero today rejected the possibility of an attack on President Iván Duque despite the fact that last December the government reported that it was investigating a presumed plan to attack the president and that several Venezuelans were part of it.

"Fortunately, the information collected does not seem to be a real possibility, but the investigation continues," explained Botero. Caracol Radio.

On 29 December Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo declared that the authorities had discovered an alleged plan to attack Duque and stressed that three Venezuelans were captured with weapons of war.

"I would like to inform you that, in fact, the international community is informed that intelligence investigations have been going on for several months on possible attacks on the president's life," Trujillo said.

According to the Foreign Minister, "to this is added the recent capture of three Venezuelan citizens who have been found in possession of weapons of war, which further increases the concerns that the authorities have had in this matter".

Two of them were captured at Valledupar, the capital of the Cesar department, on the border with Venezuela, in possession of two assault rifles and the third was arrested in Barranquilla.

However, the defense minister said today that "investigations continue, are confidential and some trips abroad have been made in the development of these investigations".

In fact, Botero clarified that "whenever a security issue comes from the president, it is immediately given the utmost importance and all necessary investigations are carried out".
