(CNN Español) – This Thursday, the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, inaugurated one of the largest electric bus terminals in Latin America, “El Conquistador de Maipú”. It is the most ambitious energy project for public transport in the southern country.
This terminal, covering over 15,000 m², will allow the integration of 215 electric buses into the system. It cost over $ 80 million, of which $ 8 million was used for construction and the remaining $ 72 million for the purchase of buses.
“These 215 electric buses will save 38,000 tons of CO2 per year. What does this amount to? It is equivalent to the CO2 captured by 2 million trees. In other words, this is equivalent to a forest the size of the municipality of Santiago, ”explained the Chilean president.
The inaugurated plant is powered 100% with clean energy thanks to the use of solar panels. In addition, the terminal will benefit more than 2 million people using public transport in Santiago.
As explained by the authorities, the new buses include USB chargers that will be available to users. They also have Wi-Fi internet, security cameras and air conditioning.
Currently, Santiago’s public transport network has 6,700 buses and, with the opening of this terminal, 776 of them will be electric in the metropolitan region. With this, there are already a total of 10 operational electrical terminals in Chile.
