During protests against the government’s measures to contain the crown pandemic in Italy, violent clashes between protesters and police broke out again on Wednesday night. The number of new infections has meanwhile reached a new high: nearly 22,000 cases have been reported in one day.
In Rome, several hundred people – between 200 and 300 supporters of the neo-fascist Forza Nuova party – clashed with the police on Tuesday evening in the central Piazza del Popolo, as reported by “La Repubblica”. Many of them were masked.
According to the Ansa agency, demonstrators set fire to garbage bins and damaged parked bicycles and scooters, and police used water cannons. “We are fathers of families, we have the right to protest”, one of the demonstrators shouted to a journalist from the newspaper “La Stampa”. “Freedom, freedom, freedom!”, Shouted a group of demonstrators at Porta Flaminia.

On Tuesday, Italy reported 21,994 new infections confirmed within one day – a record. In one month, the number of daily infections increased tenfold. The previous high was recorded only on Sunday with 21,273 cases in 24 hours. The total number of infections since the start of the pandemic has risen to over 564,000. In one day, 221 people died in connection with the virus, and Italy has had 37,700 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Italy has about 60 million inhabitants.
All restaurants and bars throughout Italy must close for guests at 18:00 on Mondays. Even cinemas, theaters, fitness rooms, swimming pools, ski resorts and concert halls can no longer open. A large percentage of high school students will initially be taught online.
Italy was one of the most affected countries in Europe at the start of the pandemic and imposed one of the longest blockades in the world. The new restrictions are causing displeasure among many Italians in the face of bleak economic forecasts. The government decided on Tuesday to provide 2.4 billion euros in aid for companies and employees affected by forced closures.
