Two weeks after Democratic candidate Joe Biden was named winner of the presidential election, Donald Trump still refuses to acknowledge his defeat and pressures every state to overturn the popular vote. The BBC has published an analysis of this possibility.
The strategy launched shortly before the vote, in relation to electoral fraud, but also the one after November 3, does not seem to bear fruit. Calls made in every lost state by Donald Trump are ignored or rejected.
The incumbent president’s team has not yet achieved notable success and allegations of massive election fraud have not been proven, although dozens of complaints have been filed, the BBC says.
Attorney Rudy Giuliani announced Thursday that he will be giving up his actions in Michigan, a state that Joe Biden won in the popular vote with a difference of more than 160,000 votes.
In Georgia, the Democratic candidate won more than 12,000 votes after nearly 5 million votes were manually counted. In fact, this US state made three communications in one day on the result of the vote count: first it announced the victory of Joe Biden, then it withdrew this announcement, and after a few hours it again announced the victory of the Democratic candidate.
The BBC also says the strategy to challenge the outcome is changing as Donald Trump’s team adopts “a long-term political move”.
But will this strategy be successful? According to the source cited, it’s not impossible, but the possibilities are very, very small. First of all, Donald Trump must transform the result in different states, where Joe Biden won the elections with a difference of tens of thousands of votes or even hundreds of thousands. However, the BBC recalls that the situation of the 2000 elections, when everything depended on a single state, Florida, does not repeat itself.
The BBC outlined a possible action plan:
- block the voting certification process in as many states as possible, either through legal action or by encouraging Republican officials to object;
- encouraging officials in Republican-controlled but almost Biden-defeated states to dismiss the popular vote results as invalid or to accuse serious fraud;
- persuade constituency voters to change the popular vote and vote for Trump instead of Biden by 14 December; this strategy is needed in several states – such as Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania – to get Trump from 232 voters to more than 269 to win the election.
- even quashing some of the 306 votes might work, because then the elections could be decided in his favor in the House of Representatives, where – although controlled by the Democrats – Trump could win by little-known rules.
