Notice from the headquarters of the EU mission “Irini”
The navy had received the reference to “Rosaline A” from the headquarters of the European mission for the Mediterranean “Irini”, currently led by a Greek officer. The EU operation aims to curb the burgeoning arms smuggling into Libya and thus to end the bloody civil war.
The navy had already stopped a cargo ship bound for Libya in the summer. The suspicion of arms smuggling was quickly confirmed at the time, as the freighter had a special type of kerosene on board that is only used for fighter jets.
Bundeswehr soldiers from the “Hamburg” frigate should clarify whether there were weapons on board in the “Rosaline A” case by Monday morning.
According to monitoring data, 20-year-old “Rosaline A” left Turkey for Libya over the weekend and was supposed to unload the cargo in Misrata in the middle of the week.
