Time is running out: in 74 days and a few hours, the Brexit countdown is over. At least until then there will be time to place bets on the United Kingdom leaving the EU. Suggestions are also useful for forecasting.
The British bet on everything and everyone: Prince Harry and the first son of Meghan Markle will become a girl named Diana? Roger Federer will win the Australian Open? Will David Beckham be the next James Bond?
The fever of betting on the big island does not stop at political events like the Brexit. Numerous bets from only the Paddy Power provider is running. If you want, you can bet if in 2019 a "hard border" will be introduced with Ireland.
Will the EU and the UK reach an agreement before March 30th? Will the British government officially rationate food in 2019? Or if the fast food chain were to close down the British outlets this year because the chicken ends?
Unlikely suggestions give more money
At Betfair, bettors bet almost 175,000 francs on various Brexit events. Even the fate of Prime Minister Theresa May is hanging on silly competition.
Anyone who is writing a new Brexit referendum this year at Ladbrokes will now return CHF 262.50 per 100 francs. If you prefer your 100 francs to a yes to "The British Parliament consents to the declaration of withdrawal of the EU by the end of January", you can hope for 750 francs.
Other bets on the new survey
A new study by the University of Cambridge shows that bets make good predictions. On the night of the Brexit census, the betting shops would have opted for an exit from the EU before the financial markets.
The current bets therefore give an indication of what awaits us in terms of Brexit. What do the current numbers indicate? Last Friday, the Paddy Power supplier adjusted the odds. Previously, a bettor who called for May to postpone Tuesday's poll came back ten times, with Paddy Power now only six times.
Another plebiscite is not excluded when it comes to betting offices. At least, in December 2018, the amounts invested increased to this result.
The uninvolved Swiss who want to bet on the future of Britain have difficulty. In many betting shops, Switzerland appears in the list of countries whose citizens and residents are not allowed to provide suggestions.
