Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who has sometimes been labeled the “Trump of the Tropics,” on Sunday insisted on supporting unsubstantiated allegations of alleged fraud by Donald Trump in the US elections.
He said he will wait a little longer to recognize Joe Biden’s victory in the North American nation’s electoral process.
After voting in the second round of municipal elections in Brazil, Bolsonaro repeated to reporters the US president’s accusations of alleged irregularities in national elections.
“I have my sources of information that there has been a lot of fraud,” he commented. “Nobody talks about it. If this were enough to define (the victory) of one or the other, I don’t know ”.
Asked if he would recognize Biden’s victory, the Brazilian president replied: “I’ll wait a little longer.”
He also expressed doubts about Brazil’s current e-voting system, which Bolsonaro says is vulnerable to fraud. He asked the country to return to the paper voting system for the 2022 presidential election.
The conservative Brazilian president has appealed in Brazil to the same kind of right-wing populist base that Trump has courted in the United States. He himself welcomed the comparisons with the president of the United States.
Like Trump, he accepted unauthorized treatments for the novel coronavirus and called for restrictions aimed at fighting the virus to be relaxed, arguing that economic losses are more damaging than the disease itself. / AP
