An anti-terrorism unit arrested a 65-year-old man from his apartment in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is believed to have been linked to the attacks on two pubs in Birmingham on 21 November 1974. 21 people were killed and more than 200 injured. The suspect should now be questioned, he said.
Last month, British Interior Minister Priti Patel considered publicly investigating the incidents. Initially flawed investigations led to the conviction of the false suspect known as the “Birmingham Six” – according to the British PA news agency “one of the largest legal failures in British legal history”. Only after 16 years in prison were they acquitted and released in 1991.
Although the Irish Republican Army (IRA) is believed to have carried out the attacks, it never took responsibility. The IRA, which has fought violently for decades to separate Northern Ireland from Britain, officially renounced violence in 2005.
