Among the candidates is Jen Psaki, who will serve as a press officer for the White House, a high-profile position. Psaki, 41, has held several high-level positions, such as communications director for the White House during President Barack Obama’s administration, of which Biden was vice president.
Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris have sought to promote diversity in the nominations that have been announced so far to join the executive, which will take office on January 20.
“I am proud to announce today the first high-level communications team in the White House, composed entirely of women,” the president-elect said in a statement.
“These skilled and experienced communicators bring diverse perspectives to their work and a shared commitment to rebuild this country,” he added.
In addition to Psaki, six other nominations have been announced.
Kate Bedingfield, who was Biden’s Deputy Campaign Director, will assume the role of Communications Director for the White House. Bedingfield was Biden’s communications director when he was deputy.
Ashley Etienne will lead communications for Harris, for which Symone Sanders will be the main spokesperson.
Pili Tobar has been appointed Deputy Director of Communications for the White House and Karine Jean Pierre will be the Deputy Chief Press Officer.
Elizabeth Alexander, in turn, will be in charge of communications for the future first lady, Jill Biden.
These appointments do not need confirmation in the Senate, unlike most positions at the cabinet level.
