Belgium may have reached the pinnacle of the second wave of the covid-19 pandemic, recording yet another drop in the number of new infections, federal health spokesman Yves Van Laethem said today.

Over the same period, deaths from covid-19 increased by 98%, reaching a daily average of 159 and a total of 12,520.
A total of 7,282 people were hospitalized until Thursday, 18% more than the same day last week, of which 1,057 in intensive care units (35% more).
From the beginning of March until Thursday, 4.2 million tests have been carried out in a country of 11.5 million inhabitants.
Belgium tightened containment measures at the end of October and will remain in place until 13 December, with the closure of trade – except for groceries, pharmacies and bookstores -, the return to teleworking as a rule and the imposition of a mandatory curfew , among other measures.
The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 1.2 million deaths in more than 48.7 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
