The biggest danger is still the weight of the snow. Both on the slopes of the mountains, where it threatens the avalanche, and on the roofs, where it can lead to collapse. The severity of the avalanche threat was experienced by the people of Balderschwang on early Monday morning.
The masses of snow hit the hotel in the Allgäu
In the Allgäuer area, isolated from the outside world, the outgoing masses of snow met a hotel. At about 300 meters wide, the avalanche thundered in the valley. Fortunately one was prepared in the hotel, the sauna and the spa area had already been locked up as a precaution. Other snow-covered slopes have been checked.
The second highest level of avalanche warning is applied in the Bavarian Alps
From the Alläuer Alps to the west to the Berchtesgaden Alps, in the Far East, the second highest level of avalanche warning applies everywhere (4). Even the minimum additional burden, for example of a single skier or snowboarder, warns the Bavarian avalanches service, could trigger large slab avalanches.
It is also stated that below a height of 1,600 meters, the snowpack soaked in rain threatens to slip on slippery, steep meadow slopes and out of forests of forests teeming with snow like slippery avalanches.
With shovels against the load of snow
The great danger also continues from the masses of snow on the roofs. The head of the State Chancellery Florian Herrmann (CSU) praised the cohesion of the population in this context. "One can say: Bavaria helps," says Herrmann. About 10,000 volunteers are in total use. Over the past few days they have cleaned over 1,000 snow roofs.
Previously, the Federal Minister of Internal Affairs Horst Seehofer had already thanked the aides for their efforts. People have been "superhuman" for days.
Up to two meters of fresh snow until Tuesday afternoon
It is not the time for everything clear. In the five districts of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Traunstein, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Miesbach and Berchtesgadener Land, the disaster continues. There, the school lesson keeps falling.
Until Tuesday afternoon, the German meteorological service continues to forecast heavy snowfall – in the Allgäu and in parts of the Berchtesgadener territory up to two meters. On Wednesday, experts therefore expect mild temperatures throughout Bavaria – which, however, snow could be even more difficult.
Easy relaxation in Lower Bavaria
Only in Lower Bavaria the situation has already relaxed a bit. There, the Straubing district office announced today that all local district roads are free and passable again. Even the lessons take place everywhere again.
