Azerbaijan pushes, Russia insists … The Turkish military conundrum in maintaining peace

The clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which began in Nagorno-Karabakh on 27 September, ended after Armenia declared it had lost the war.

During the signing of a joint declaration under the mediation of Russia, it was decided to establish a peacekeeping force in the Nagorno-Karabakh and Lachin corridor. The peacekeepers, made up of 1,960 soldiers, 90 armored personnel carriers, 380 vehicles and special equipment, patrol the corridor where the Russian troops will be located.

There have been statements one after another on the peacekeeping force in question today. Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, saying peacekeepers will play a role in Turkey’s President Erdogan, Russia and Turkey have met to establish a joint observatory to monitor the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“A SEPARATE OBJECT OF AGREEMENT”

The Kremlin’s response to this statement was swift. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that there is no agreement on the deployment of Turkish peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh. Peskov said the ceasefire observatory to be set up outside Nagorno-Karabakh is the subject of a separate agreement.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said negotiations on the issue are underway. Speaking at a joint press conference with Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbaev, Çavuşoğlu said: “When these initiatives took place, we were always in contact with Azerbaijan and Russia, and we continued our meetings. A ceasefire was signed between the three countries last night. We are now negotiating on how to monitor and control this, “he said.
