Mass testing for the new type of coronavirus will take place in Austria in two stages, in December and January, to prevent further quarantine periods, the Austrian government announced on Friday.

“A few minutes of testing could prevent several weeks of quarantine for the whole country,” Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said in a statement. “We will be able to quickly identify large numbers of contaminated people and we will be able to break the chain of infections,” he added.
Seven million antigen tests to find out the result in a few minutes have been ordered from Austria, a country with 8.9 million inhabitants.
The tests will begin with teachers and educators on 5 and 6 December, when the second quarantine period ends in Austria. Police officers will then be tested, followed by a voluntary test phase of the entire population.
