In Western Australia, a man died after a shark attack. Police said they were called to the tourist-frequented Cable Beach area on the Indian Ocean Sunday morning due to a shark attack. The 55-year-old was pulled out of the water and received medical treatment, police said. He later succumbed to his injuries.

According to local police inspector Gene Pears, the victim was about 30-40 meters from the beach with his bodyboard in the water when the attack occurred. The man is said to have sustained injuries to his leg and hand. “This is a very tragic and unexpected accident,” Pears said.

It is extremely rare for animals to attack humans at Cable Beach, which is 14 miles long near the city of Broome. According to local reporters, the species could be a tiger shark. These sometimes approached the coast when attracted by schools of fish. Police said they shot the shark, which was still close to the coast, about half an hour after the incident.

According to authorities, this year was the eighth fatal shark attack on a person in Australia. In 1929 alone the number was higher, with nine of these fatal accidents in Australia.
