The Eritrean capital, Asmara, was reportedly attacked with multiple rockets from the Tigray region. The conflict between Ethiopia and the separatist region threatens to hit Eritrea as well.
The conflict in Ethiopia appears to be getting worse. On Saturday evening, several rockets were launched from the Ethiopian region of Tigray against the capital of Eritrea. The news agencies Reuters and AFP reported, citing several diplomats. At least two missiles hit Asmara airport.
How many bullets were fired and what damage was initially caused was unclear. Eritrean radio station Erena reported a total of four explosions, citing Asmara residents.
The TPLF had threatened to attack
The People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which rules Tigray, had previously threatened missile attacks on targets in Eritrea. He accuses Eritrea of supporting the Ethiopian government in the conflict with the TPLF. There had already been tension in the Tigray in the past few months. The TPLF does not recognize Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Abiy has been Prime Minister of Ethiopia since April 2018. The TPLF has not joined the government of national unity he formed. Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for his efforts to achieve reconciliation with neighboring Eritrea. It also opened up Ethiopia economically and politically, but failed to keep ethnic unrest in check.
Thousands on the run
The military conflict between the Ethiopian central government forces in Addis Ababa and the TPLF fighters broke out completely earlier this month. Since then, according to the Sudanese refugee agency, at least 21,000 Ethiopians have fled fighting in neighboring Sudan.
Human rights organization Amnesty International also reported on Thursday of a massacre of civilians in Tigray, likely with hundreds of deaths. Those responsible for the attack in the city of Mai-Kadra were initially unknown.
