The attackers attacked a police barracks and ransacked several banks one day after a similar event in the south of the country, in the city of Criciúma, where about 30 heavily armed hooded men carried out a robbery.
About twenty armed men carried out another violent assault in Brazil this Wednesday 2-D, in less than 24 hours, this time in the north of the country, in Cametá, a city in the Amazonian state of Pará, which caused the death of a person and another injured after being taken hostage.
The attackers attacked a police barracks and ransacked several banks a day after a similar event occurred in the south of the country, in the city of Criciúma, where about 30 heavily armed and hooded men carried out a robbery.
According to preliminary reports from the authorities, in the attack on Cametá the criminals took hostage about ten people who were taken from various bars in the area and used as human shields.
The criminals were all armed and, as in yesterday’s attack, they attacked the police barracks with explosives to prevent the officers from leaving.
The assault, in which one of the hostages died, lasted about two hours and at least two bank branches were destroyed by the criminals who fled the scene in boats and cars.
The Pará Public Security Secretariat has sent reinforcements to the city to help local authorities stop hostilities.
According to the Secretariat, a truck was found abandoned near the city with several explosive charges inside.
Cametá, with around 140,000 inhabitants, is located on the banks of the Tocantins River in the north of the state of Pará. Being a place located in the middle of the Brazilian Amazon, it is difficult to access and most people use boats to get around the region.
So far, the authorities do not know the total amount stolen by the criminals. They also don’t know for sure the number of people who made up the band from which no members were caught.
The events were similar to those that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in the southern Brazilian city of Criciúma, where around 30 men took hostages, blocked roads, set fire to vehicles and shot for about two hours to rob a bank.
The assailants fled in 10 large and valuable vehicles with a sum of money not yet estimated, but which according to the police was “high”.
The action was described by the authorities as “extremely violent” and left a police officer and a security guard injured.
