An Italian city sells houses for the price of one euro

Dozens of houses were put up for sale at the price of one euro in Sambuca, a city on a hill overlooking the island of Sicily and the nearby beaches.

With this offer, local authorities try to revive the city, which, like many other rural areas in Italy, was depopulated after the inhabitants moved to larger cities.

Sambuca is not the first Italian city to come with such an offer, but the mayor here claims to have done his best to eliminate the bureaucracy, so that anyone interested is able to buy it immediately.

"Unlike other cities that have just done this for propaganda, the city hall here houses all the houses for sale for 1 euro"says Giuseppe Cacioppo, vice mayor of the town.

"We are not intermediaries linking old and new owners", he added, according to Libertatea.ro.

The new owners must undertake to renovate the house acquired in the next three years and invest at least 15,000 euros. In addition, they must lodge a security of EUR 5,000, which will be fully reimbursed once the restructuring is complete.
