American plan for the poorest region of the country: modern roads and railways to connect Moldova with the Via Carpathia highway

Adrian Zuckerman specified that the Northeast region, the poorest in the country, could be connected to the Via Carpathia infrastructure project by road and rail. This is the highway that is supposed to connect the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea and cross seven countries, including Romania.

According to the ambassador, talks between American and Romanian officials have already begun, and at this moment the financing solutions for the two projects are being sought.

“I met with the Minister of Transport last week to make plans, to see exactly the route for the road and the route for the railway. As we speak now there are groups from the Ministry of Transport and the Embassy who are working now and who are trying to finance and pay for it. Both by road and by rail, between the two seas we were working with Poland, they will play the part of Gdansk and we are starting from here and I hope it will be done. In the next 3-4 years I hope that both projects are completed, “said the ambassador.

The Via Carpathia project is developed under the Three Seas Initiative, which is a flexible and informal political platform at the presidential level, bringing together the 12 EU Member States between the Adriatic, Baltic and Black Sea (Austria, Bulgaria , Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia). , Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia).

The highway project was established as part of a Three Countries Initiative summit in 2018, and US officials recently announced that the US is supporting the project.

The Via Carpathia will start in Lithuania and will cross Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. The highway would run from the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda to the Greek port of Thessaloniki, cutting through Romania through its western part. The ports of Constanta (Romania) and Gdansk (Poland) are not located on the direct route of the highway, but will be connected to it by other parts of the highway (Highway Constanta – Bucharest – Pitesti – Sibiu – Lugoj in the case of Romania).
