The South African National Lottery is under investigation for fraud allegations after winning numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 were drawn during the last draw.
An unusual sequence of numbers drawn from the South African national lottery left players stunned and sparked allegations of fraud after 20 people were forced to share the jackpot, writes The Guardian.
The consecutive numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and the “PowerBall” number of 10 were the winning combination of the South African national lottery on Tuesday night.
Twenty lucky players have won the jackpot and will each receive the equivalent of approximately € 305,000.
Another 79 won € 400 each after matching the sequence of 5 numbers, missing the PowerBall instead.
“Congratulations to the 20 winners of tonight’s PowerBall draw,” the lottery tweeted Tuesday at the end. “These numbers may be unexpected, but we see that many players choose to play these sequences,” the lottery said.
“There can’t even be a coincidence like hell”
Many stunned South Africans on Wednesday used social media to claim that the results were rigged.
“The lottery shows it’s a scam,” wrote a Twitter user. “20 people agreed on this and shared the jackpot equally,” ventured another.
“Absolutely nowhere, not even in hell, can there be such a coincidence,” said another South African.
The National Lottery Commission of South Africa (NLC), which also regulates this game, said this combination of six consecutive numbers was unprecedented and has undertaken to analyze the draw.
While it is not uncommon for two players to share the jackpot, multiple winners are extremely rare.
In March 2003, 33 players won part of the jackpot, according to a South African website that analyzes lottery draws.
