In the United States, police fatal blows against an African American have sparked new protests, some of them violent. In Philadelphia, around 1,000 people are looting the city. Meanwhile, the mayor and the police chief promise to clarify the background to the shooting.
After the death of an African American in the US state of Pennsylvania, riots broke out in the city of Philadelphia for the second night in a row. “A large group of around 1,000 people are looting businesses in the Castor and Aramingo area,” local police said. Fox TV images showed some masked people apparently walking in and out of a shop.
The violence came after a 27-year-old black man was killed by police officers. The man was armed with a knife and did not drop it despite repeated requests, a police spokesman told a local television station. The suspect had moved to the police, after which two officers shot him multiple times.
“Raise difficult questions”
After the incident on Monday afternoon, riots had already broken out on Tuesday night. According to media reports, several police officers were injured and arrests were made. Mayor Jim Kenney said, referring to the incident, which was filmed by passersby using smartphones, “I saw the video of this tragic incident. It raises difficult questions that need to be answered.” Police Chief Danielle Outlaw has promised a thorough investigation into the case.
Since the end of May there have been protests against racism and police violence in the United States. The trigger for the protests was the brutal killing of unarmed African American George Floyd during a police operation in the city of Minneapolis. Presidential candidate Joe Biden had expressed sympathy for the deceased’s relatives, but also condemned the riots: “At the same time, anger at the real injustices of our society does not excuse violence.” Attacks on police officers and the destruction of small businesses would not bring justice.
