Hunger epidemic
The head of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has a terrible message to the world: unless he receives billions of dollars in new funding, dozens of countries could face severe famines next year.
WFP chief David Beasley said so The Associated Press that the agency needs to raise $ 5 billion just to ward off global famine and another $ 10 billion to feed malnourished children around the world. Otherwise, he said, “we will have famines of biblical proportions in 2021”.

Beasley says WFP was able to avoid the crisis last year because world leaders have stepped up funding. But next year that money will not be available, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he pointed to the recent WFP Nobel Prize win as a major publicity boost that sparked more interest in the goals of the United Nations organization.
“Everyone now wants to meet the Nobel Peace Prize winner,” Beasley told al AP, saying his typical meeting with a world leader is now 45 instead of 15 minutes.
Global problem
Meetings alone won’t avoid disaster, though – and to complement limited funding, Beasley says AP who plans to ask the world’s billionaires, many of whom got much richer during the pandemic, to intervene. Without this support, he says, as many as 36 countries could be in serious trouble.
“We’re very, very, very worried,” Beasley said. “2021 will be a very bad year.”
