UPDATE 20.00 Azerbaijan has admitted that it accidentally shot down the Russian Mi-24 military helicopter in the region bordering Armenia, CNN writes.

Azerbaijan apologized for the “accidental” shooting down of the Russian military helicopter in the Armenian area, which killed two crew members and wounded one. The Azerbaijani foreign ministry added that it was willing to pay compensation.

THE INITIAL NEWS

The ministry said the Mi-24 helicopter was hit by a portable air defense system near the border with Azerbaijan while escorting a Russian military convoy to the border with Azerbaijan.

A third person was injured and evacuated.

“The Russian Mi-24 helicopter was shot down in the airspace on the territory of the Republic of Armenia outside the combat zone,” said Major General of the Defense Department Igor Konashenkov.

An investigation is currently underway to establish the nationality of the attackers or any other potential affiliations.

Yerevan is willing to provide information to Moscow during the investigation, a spokesman for the Armenian Defense Ministry said.

Armenian authorities, in turn, said the Russian helicopter crashed “in a gorge” near the village of Yeraskh.

The incident occurred during the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the highly disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, where active hostilities resumed on 27 September. Baku and Yerevan accused each other of bombing residential areas. The parties signed three ceasefire agreements, but the fighting continues to this day.

The recent fighting was the worst in decades, with at least 1,000 people killed, including dozens of civilians, and the death toll is believed to be much higher.

Azerbaijan said on Sunday that its forces had captured the strategic town of Susha, but Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Monday that fighting was continuing.
