The city of Freiburg in southwestern Germany has started a special project for the city’s 1,000th birthday in 2120: citizens can write letters that shouldn’t be open for a hundred years.

“The letter campaign offers a unique opportunity to send a message to the future,” Mayor Martin Horn said early Thursday.
Until July 15, 2021, letters can be thrown into the anniversary mailbox in front of the Old Town Hall or sent in another envelope to the City Anniversary project group. The actual letter envelope should say who should read it 100 years from now.
It could be your descendants, the future owners of the house you currently live in, the Federal Chancellor, or the coach of a football team, the city suggested. The sender’s name, address, and other voluntary information about the person should appear on the back of the envelope.
“After that, people’s thoughts fall into a hundred-year sleep,” he said. The letters are kept in the city archive and delivered to the specified recipients in 2120. “This creates a collective legacy for posterity, texts and thoughts from these very different twenty years that cannot be found in any history book, newspaper or novel “.
