The outgoing US administration of President Donald Trump must fully restore the so-called “Dreamer” program to protect illegal immigrants from deportation after a court ruling. The government must allow all eligible immigrant children to apply for the program, Brooklyn District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis said Friday. Trump has already suffered several legal losses in the dispute over the program introduced by former President Barack Obama.
Obama introduced the program by decree in 2012 to protect the children of illegal immigrants known as “Dreamers” from deportation. Under the program, also known as Daca, approximately 700,000 people have received renewable deportation protection for two years and also includes a US work permit.
As part of his campaign against illegal immigration, Trump announced the abolition of the program after taking office in 2017. In the summer of this year, the president suffered a defeat in the Supreme Court. The Washington judges upheld the protection against expulsion for the approximately 700,000 “Dreamers” and declared the cancellation of the program illegal.
As a result, the Ministry of Internal Security, responsible for immigrants, has issued restrictions under which it is no longer possible to submit new applications for the program and the residence permit of program participants can only be extended by one year instead of two. previous years. Following the court ruling on Friday, the ministry now has until Monday to post the full reintroduction of the program on its website.
Washington’s Center for American Progress research institute estimates that some 300,000 people who can now participate in the DACA program could benefit from the court’s decision. President-elect Joe Biden had already announced during the election campaign that the program would be restored.
