According to the news reported by the New York Times, the US has decided to withdraw all its troops in Somalia.
US President Trump continues without making critical decisions in the final days of his office. Trump, who during his presidency withdrew US troops from many countries saying ‘stop the endless war’, has also decided to recall the military group of about 700 people to Somalia.
The Pentagon announced that the troops, most of which were conducting training and counter-terrorism missions, and most of their Special Ops, would be leaving by January 15. Five days before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.
A Defense Department official said most of the troops will be “relocated” to neighboring Kenya.
American troops were in Somalia to help local forces defeat the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab rebellion.
The report said it is uncertain whether CIA officers and embassy employees in Somalia will leave the country.
