The Guardian says a mysterious new metal “monolith” appeared atop a mountain in California, just a week after a similar structure caught the world’s attention when it was discovered in the Utah desert and then disappeared.
The international press refers to the discovery as a “monolith”, a work or monument built on a stone, although the object is made of metal.
The local newspaper in the small town of Atascadero on California’s central coast reported that the silver column was found atop Pine Mountain, where dozens of local hikers traveled to see and photograph it.
“The three-sided obelisk appeared to be made of stainless steel, 3 meters high and 45 centimeters wide. The object was welded at each corner, with rivets securing the side panels to a likely internal steel structure,” reported the Atascadero News.
Contrary to what happened in Utah, where the object was buried in the rocks, the Atascadero “monolith” was apparently unstable and the newspaper reported that it could be pushed.
Until now it is unknown who was responsible for the installation in Utah and theories soon spoke of extraterrestrials. Due to the film associations, a spokesman for the Utah Film Commission said he did not know the origin of the object. “As far as we know, the monolith that was found in Utah this week is not from a movie production.”
However, the Atascadero “monolith” is not the first imitator of the Utah original. In the midst of growing international attention to the mystery, a similar structure would have been found in the mountains of Romania. As always, the mystery remained in the air.
