A senior election official in Georgia addressed an urgent appeal to incumbent US President Donald Trump in the face of continuing doubts about election results and threats of violence against those involved in the elections. “Show your size, stop it. Come in, tell your supporters: don’t be violent. Stop threatening. This is all wrong, he’s not American, ”Gabriel Sterling said in a press statement in Atlanta.
Addressing Trump, the official said, “You have the right to go to court,” he said. But apparently he was unable to “stop convincing people to commit possible acts of violence.” Sterling warned, “Someone will get hurt. Someone will be shot. Someone will be killed.”
Sterling said he was angry at the threats election officials faced in the southern state. Trump was narrowly defeated by election winner Joe Biden. A second counting of votes is currently underway. However, even this time the managers do not expect any change in the result.
Trump has not yet admitted his electoral defeat against Biden and almost daily spreads unsubstantiated claims about alleged irregularities in the elections that would have cost him victory.
Sterling accused Trump and the senators of failing to condemn the threats. It is about elections and therefore the backbone of democracy. “All of you who haven’t said a damn word have been complicit,” he said. “Threats of death, threats of violence, intimidation. This is too much.”
Trump and his confidants have been raising the mood against election leaders in Georgia for weeks, for example against Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who claims he has received death threats.
More recently, Trump has made derogatory remarks about Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who feels disappointed in his attempts to overturn the election result. On Tuesday he asked him to do something about the election result. “You allowed your state to be betrayed,” Trump accused his party colleague on Twitter. He called on him to call off the ballot election for two Senate seats in January, the result of which could break Republican dominance in the important House of Congress.
On Monday, one of the president’s attorneys, Joseph diGenova, attended a TV show and said Christopher Krebs, the former head of the US cyber security agency, is expected to be killed. Krebs was fired by Trump after he said there was no evidence the vote was compromised.
