Karl Marx’s tomb transformed into a tourist attraction

The arrangement of a tourist area in Highgate Cemetery in north London, where Karl Marx was buried, has caused controversy. In addition to a landscape, it is planned to have an exhibition area, a souvenir shop and a café in the cemetery. The project in question was defended by the Highgate Cemetery Foundation, claiming that death has become fashionable.

Head of the Highgate Cemetery Foundation, Dr. Ian Dungavell says, “People thought visiting cemeteries was scary and strange. “Death tourism has become fashionable today, with the spread of sites for finding family trees on the Internet.”

The cemetery, frequented by about 100,000 visitors a year, was inaugurated in 1839 when there were no public parks in London. It has given people living in the city the opportunity to breathe.
