The Federal Association of Associations of German Pharmacists (ABDA) has issued an urgent warning of bottlenecks in the administration of record-breaking drugs. Now we need European solutions.
More and more patients in Europe are suffering from bottlenecks in the delivery of prescription drugs. In the first half of 2020, the number of drugs not available in Germany alone increased to 12.1 million packs.
Millions of patients affected
“Not only antihypertensive drugs, gastric acid blockers and analgesics, but also drugs for depression, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease suffer from delivery bottlenecks. Pharmacists across Europe go to great lengths to provide their patients with the necessary preparations, ”says Mathias Arnold, vice president of ABDA.
And: “We also need a European solution for millions of affected patients across Europe. The European Commission’s new drug strategy is an important step in the right direction. “
Strengthen production in Europe
The reasons for the drug shortage are production downtime, export stops and logistical problems in Asia. This was already evident during the first wave. We now urgently need to step up production in Europe. “This requires a European approach that consistently represents our common quality, social and environmental standards to business partners around the world,” continues Arnold.
